The chart shows the recycling rates of four materials: paper and cardboard, glass containers, aluminium cans, and plastics from 1982 to 2010.
Paper and cardboard were recycled the most. In 1982, about 65% were recycled. The number went up to 80% in 1994, then slowly went down to around 70% in 2010.
Glass containers started at about 50%, then dropped a little, and later increased again. By 2010, around 60% were recycled.
Aluminium cans were recycled the least at first, starting at around 5% in 1986. But over time, the rate increased and reached almost 45% in 2010.
Plastics had the lowest recycling rate. It started in 1990 at about 2%, and only grew to around 8% by 2010.
In short, paper and cardboard were always the most recycled, while plastics were the least. Aluminium cans and glass containers increased over time.
