The graph below shows the proportion of four different materials that were recycled from 1982 to 2010 in a particular country.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

The given line graph illustrates the percentage of four recycled materials between 1982 and 2010 in a specific country

Overall, it is obvious that the recycling rate of four materials all showed a upward trend. Additionally, the amount of paper and cardboard which was used for eco-friendly purposes was significantly higher than that of plastics.

In 1982, citizens who were living in that country collected 65% of paper and cardboard to recycle. That figure was considerably lower in glass containers with exactly 50%. In the first few years, the recycling rate of paper and cardboard fluctuated and reached its peak in 1994 with 80%. However, the percentage decreased continuously in the next 16 years and ended up with 70%. The similar pattern was witnessed in glass containers with a decrease of 10% in 1990 but gradually recovered and hit the second position at 60% by the end of the period.

Alumininium cans and plastics, on the other hand, did not appear on the line graph until 1986 and 1990 respectively. Over the course of 28 years, the demand of selecting alumininium cans to recycle rose dramatically, which made the percentage of this material surged from 5% to 45% in 2010. By contrast, recycling rate of plastics, despite showing upward trend, still remained under 10%.

Write about the following topic:

Learning English at school is often seen as more important than learning local languages. If these are not taught, many are at risk of dying out. 

In your opinion, is it important for everyone to learn English? Should we try to ensure the survival of local languages and, if so, how?

 

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Answer

In recent years, several individuals prioritize English and consider it as a compulsory subject at school. On the other hand, some people argue that local languages should also be preserved rather than neglected. Personally, although learning English is encouraged, ensuring the survival of local languages is also imperative.

On the one hand, there are major rationales that support the claim that everyone should acquire English. First, due to the rapid global integration, English is nowadays used as the primary language in almost every worldwide affairs. This situation is proved through a huge amount of documents written in English, numerous enterprises also consider English as a prerequisite when recruiting employees. Therefore, individuals who are unable to communicate in this language will face challenging difficulties in their further career , especially the young generation. 

On the other hand, it is unacceptable if people let local languages gradually phase out without taking action. Based on common knowledge, it is known that a language was established through different time periods, with the adjustments and modifications throughout the timeframe. As a result, a language contains more meaningful cultural values than everybody expects. For instance, such a language could convey messages about the lifestyle, school of thought, ideology of a specific era in the past. Therefore, if residents continue to let local languages go unnoticed, they can lose a vast source of cultural heritage.

Despite the above concerns, there are some effective solutions that can be implemented to address the problem. First and foremost, the government should organize educational campaigns and incorporate such languages into academic lectures to propagate the intrinsic values of the local languages. Once local people are fully aware of the importance of these languages, both the councilors and residents can cooperate together to elevate the position of the languages. To cite an example, the officials can take advantage of tourism to increase the popularity. The local citizens, at the same time, can act as tour guides to provide foreign visitors with informative knowledge. By doing these measures, it is unlikely that local languages will diminish.

In conclusion, despite the need for English in this day and age, local languages should also be valued for their cultural significance. Therefore, it is prudent that the government as well as local people take action together through educational campaigns and tourism initiatives to sustain the survival of these languages.
